An Autograph of Ṭūsī's Ḥall mushkilāt al-Ishārāt?

Naṣīr al-Dīn Ṭūsī’s (d. 672 AH) Ḥall mushkilāt al-Ishārāt is the most important commentary on Ibn Sīnā’s (d. 427 AH) influential philosophical compendium, the Kitāb al-Ishārāt wa-l-tanbīhāt, to have been written ever. To this day, hundreds of manuscripts of this commentary can be found in libraries throughout the world. Since 1864, the Ḥall has seen at least eight lithographic and four printed editions, many more than Ibn Sīnā’s Ishārāt itself. In view of the importance of the Ḥall, the announcement of the existence of an autograph, revised by Ṭūsī himself, is surely cause for excitement. The present article contains a critical review of the facsimile edition in which this far-reaching assertion is made. Careful analysis of the evidence supplied by the author will lead to the conclusion that his claim is unfortunately in no way supported by the facts.

The Septuagint and Alexandrian Scholarship

The origins of the Septuagint of the Pentateuch is a disputed issue. Opinions about the Letter of Aristeas, representing the most ancient account of the matter, differ widely as for the historical value of this document. In a recent study, Sylvie Honigman has advanced a new theory about the original setting of the Greek version of the Pentateuch, the Law of the Jews, (a theory) which is based on an innovative analysis of the Letter of Aristeas. This review article offers a description and critical assessment of her ideas, particularly so regarding her focus on Homeric scholarship. It is argued that, instead of the ‘Homeric paradigm’ as proposed by Honigman, the idea of a ‘philosophical’ paradigm does more justice to the data in the Letter. The question is then dealt with in which way this alternative paradigm could serve as a window on the origins of the Greek Pentateuch.

A New Edition of the 'Book of Nut'

Review of the most recent edition of the cosmographic composition 'the Book of Nut', a detailed outline of the movements of the sun, decan stars, and other celestial bodies, recounted within a mythological framework. First attested in the Osireion of Sety I at Abydos, this important text is attested in Pharaonic tombs as well as on Hieratic and Demotic papyri of the Roman Period, several of which are published for the first time. While the new parallels greatly advance our understanding of the Book of Nut, the difficult hieroglyphic texts, partially composed in enigmatic writing, still invite further study.
